Flip your mattress every 3 months

This is probably the single most important tip we can give you: flip your mattress every 3 months. Do this in two moves — head-to-toe (turning it 180 degrees) and top-to-bottom (flipping it over, so the other side faces up).

Why does this matter so much? The spots where you lie the most — usually your hips and shoulders — take on the most pressure, and that's always the same side and direction of the mattress. Keep using it the same way forever, and the material there wears down faster, creating pressure points that don't bounce back. By flipping both head-to-toe and top-to-bottom, you spread that pressure across every side and corner of the mattress. The comfort stays even everywhere, the filling holds its shape for longer, and you simply get to enjoy your bed properly for years to come.

A good rule of thumb: flip with the seasons. Four season changes a year is the perfect moment to remember.

And the rest of your bed?

Besides flipping your mattress, it's good to know what you can — and can't — do with the other parts of your bed.

The topper cover can be washed, no fuss, at 30 degrees. Just unzip it, pop it in the machine, and you're done — handy for the odd stain or whenever it needs a refresh. That keeps not just your mattress, but the layer right on top of it, in top shape.

The upholstered fabric of the boxspring itself (the base and headboard, if you have one) is a different story: this fabric can't be washed. It simply isn't made for it, and there's a real risk of shrinkage, which means it won't fit properly around the mattress anymore. Got a stain? Gently vacuum it or dab with a slightly damp cloth — just don't let the fabric get properly soaked.
